Jack Kimani

Climate Action Platform for Africa

climate positive economic development

【BIOGRAPHY】

Jack Kimani is the Founding CEO of the Climate Action Platform for Africa (CAP-A), a system orchestrator focused on unlocking Africa’s potential as a global hub for climate action that underpins a new climate smart model of economic growth and inclusive livelihoods. He has over 25 years of professional experience with his work cutting across sectors and geographies. Recent work has focused on helping African governments unlock their potential as globally competitive locations for climate action, and showing how this could have substantial co-benefits for inclusive growth. As part of this work, he has worked closely with policymakers, business leaders and social entrepreneurs to systemically reorient their economic growth and development plans towards realizing Climate Positive Growth i.e. economic growth through climate action.Formerly, Mr. Kimani was a founding member of the Clinton-Hunter Development Initiative (CHDI) and the Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI) of the Clinton Foundation where he played a key role in growing both initiatives early operations. In 2008, he was tasked with setting up the CCI programs in East Africa which included initiating joint planning with multiple government, community and NGO partners to help develop large scale conservation and restoration projects and accompanying systems for measurement, reporting, and verification. Prior to joining the Clinton Foundation, Mr. Kimani was a corporate finance professional working in the United States managing the financial operations for a business unit of a Forbes 400 leading logistics and transport company.Mr. Kimani is an MBA graduate of the University of Wisconsin (Oshkosh). He also holds an Economics degree from the University of Wisconsin (Green Bay).

杰克·基马尼(Jack Kimani)是非洲气候行动平台(Climate Action Platform for Africa,简称CAP-A)的创始首席执行官。

Phosphorus Sustainability and Role of Large Efforts in Addressing Major Challenges【ABSTRACT】

Phosphorus (P) is a critical component of cellular structures like DNA and processes like energy transfer and underpins the productivity of food systems as a key nutrient in fertilizers. Yet many challenges exist around the availability, application, management, and disposal or reuse of P: P is sourced from non-renewable phosphate rock, is inefficiently utilized in food systems, and accumulates in terrestrial systems such as soils and freshwater sources, the latter of which causes harmful algal blooms and hypoxia of marine life. Without intervention, the environmental, economic, and sustainability issues involving phosphorus will escalate with continued world population growth. In fact, a paradigm shift is needed in how we discover and develop materials, technologies, and strategies to control, recover, reuse, and manage phosphorus such that the solutions can have a transformative impact on improving the circularity of the P cycle. This presentation will introduce the Science and Technologies for Phosphorus Sustainability (STEPS) Center, a U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF)-supported Science and Technology Center (STC). STEPS is a convergence research center that addresses the complex challenges in phosphorus sustainability by integrating disciplinary contributions across the physical, life, social, and economic sciences. STEPS draws from atomic and molecular insights (e.g., chemistry, materials research, biochemistry, bioengineering) to develop materials and technologies that are deployed at the human scale (e.g., environmental and agricultural engineering, plant biology, crop and soil sciences) while considering supply-chain logistics, life cycle, and other regional and global issues (e.g., ecology, economics, sociology, policy). STEPS further leverages disciplinary contributions that transcend length scales and serve as integration mechanisms within the Center (e.g., science of team science, data science). Some specific research successes from the STEPS Year 1-3 research portfolio will be highlighted.

(Science and Technologies for Phosphorus Sustainability,简称STEPS)中心,这是一个由美国国家科学基金会(U.S. National Science Foundation,简称NSF)支持的科学与技术中心(Science and Technology Center,简称STC)。
